Category 6A (Augmented Cat6) is the recommended standard for any new commercial installation that demands full 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance at the full 100-meter horizontal run distance. Operating at 500 MHz — double the bandwidth of Cat6 — Cat6A is the preferred choice for data centers, healthcare facilities, multi-tenant commercial buildings, and any environment deploying high-density PoE++.
ANSI/TIA-568.2-D, the current copper cabling standard, recommends Cat6A for PoE applications requiring IEEE 802.3bt (up to 90 watts per port). At that power level, Cat6A’s improved conductor gauge and lower DC resistance significantly reduce heat buildup in bundled cable runs — a real concern in Dallas buildings with limited ceiling space. BICSI’s TDMM (Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual) cites Cat6A as the preferred horizontal medium for enterprise and healthcare environments.
Cat6A cable is larger in diameter than Cat6 and requires wider conduit and more fill space in cable trays. Just Cabling accounts for this during design to avoid installation issues and to meet fire code requirements for plenum-rated spaces. For DFW office build-outs, distribution centers, and medical offices, we routinely spec Cat6A as the right long-term investment.
